joseh talks about his music

I believe one's music is a picture of who one is and where he is from. I was born in a tropical town in Brazil at the end of the 70s. At that time, Brazilian music was in a process of opening itself to external influences in order to blend with its traditional musics. With this tropicalist perspective, my musical taste was formed. I grew up listening to samba, bossa nova, MPB (Brazilian Pop Music) and Brazilian and American Pop Rock. Having spent my childhood listening to music and going to concerts by great artists such as Rita Lee, Gilberto Gil, Nara Leao and so on, I fell in love with music. In my adolescence, I joined professional choirs such as "De Coro & Alma", which taught me how to carry myself on stage in a way that is confident and playful. At the same time, I began to perform solo in Brazil singing MPB and Brazilian Rock in bars. In 2004, I met Sambanana (Rodrigo Silva-guitar and Dan Magay-sax) in San Francisco and we performed standards, bossa novas and chorinhos in the Bay Area in wonderful venues such as the Samovar Tea Lounge. Last year, I performed and co-wrote a song "Amor Bossa Nova" for the Greenscapes project with Rickert & Vesely (greenscapesmusic.com). Over time, my connection with music has transformed from listener, to performer, to composer and now researcher. Deepening this process, I have researched the healing properties of music and have incorporated this experience in my work. For this purpose I have found the right partner to do this new kind of music. My new project is very heartfelt and subtle. Together with the great pianist Duane Frybarger and the impeccable percussionist Andrew Foster, we are performing wonderful bossa novas, some jazz and music from other countries. Our own take is unique and makes you feel as if you were listening to the song for the first time. My smooth interpretation, Duane's melodic piano arrangments and Andrew's tasteful percussion work melt our hearts while slowing us down, allowing us space to relax our minds and be present in the moment.
